Faculty, staff enhance ability to facilitate diversity in classroom

Faculty and staff participate in the Summer Institute for Intercultural Professional Development and Pedagogy

This fall, 30-plus faculty and staff from across the University will be more equipped to facilitate diverse experiences in their educational offerings and to promote inclusion and equity at the University. They participated in the Summer Institute for Intercultural Professional Development and Pedagogy this past July.  Advanced by members of the Curricular Changes and Faculty Development sub-committee of the Campus Climate Implementation Team, the Institute emerged from recommendations provided by the campus community in fall 2014 as part of the Deliberative Dialogue Series on Inclusion.

Jose Villalba, senior associate dean for faculty, evaluation, and inclusivity, and Shayla Herndon-Edmunds, director of diversity education, spearheaded the effort with support from Barbee Oakes, chief diversity officer, Lynn Sutton, vice provost, and Catherine Ross, director of the Teaching and Learning Center. Former Wake Forest Fellows Muhammad Siddiqui and Nia Evans also contributed greatly to the development and implementation of the Institute.

Participants in the Institute were selected after completing an application for admission and were assigned pre-readings for discussions during the two-day, overnight experience at Graylyn International Conference Center. The Institute covered a wide-range of topics, including facilitating difficult dialogues in the classroom and campus settings, the role that self-awareness plays in cultural competence, and best practices for creating inclusive spaces. Each participant left the Institute with a personal action plan to continue to strengthen their skills, and they also reported significant increases in their confidence and ability to manage complex discussions around difference, empathize with others, among other measures of intercultural competence according to a pre- and post-test administered by Dr. Villalba.

“What I find most impactful about the Institute is that faculty and staff now have more tools and skills at their disposal to improve interactions with students, shape campus departments, and create programs,” said Villalba. “Their willingness to challenge themselves to be more inclusive and aware as educators is a great model for our campus community and hopefully will inspire others to do the same.”

The Institute is a part of the Dean of the College’s “Maximizing Inclusivity + Minimizing Apathy (MIMA)” professional development series for faculty and staff. MIMA offers skills-based workshops in the fall semester and awareness/theoretical sessions in the spring. This October, faculty and staff can look forward to a session that addresses the complex mental health concerns of students on campus. University hires first full-time Title IX coordinator

Tanya Jachimiak has been named Wake Forest’s first full-time Title IX coordinator. Jachimiak, who most recently served as executive associate director and Title IX coordinator for the University of Illinois at Chicago, will assume her duties on Nov. 3.

Her primary responsibilities at Wake Forest will be the coordination and implementation of the University’s Title IX compliance efforts, and helping to strengthen a culture that supports a safe and respectful learning, working and living environment.

Jachimiak holds a BS from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a JD from DePaul University. In her early career, she practiced employment law, including class action litigation, for more than 10 years in the private sector. She then spent six years at her undergraduate alma mater as the Title IX coordinator.

A message about technology and its future at Wake Forest

Dear Wake Forest Faculty, Staff and Students,

In May 2014, a committee of Wake Foresters representing various areas of the University completed a review of the technological landscape in higher education and began the important challenge of exploring what the future of collaborative work might look like in the next five years.

After site visits, interviews and research, the committee produced “Vision 2020: Charting A Course for Academic Computing at Wake Forest,” a white paper that envisions how technology changes already underway can support teaching and learning at Wake Forest.

From an environmental scan to recommendations regarding teaching and learning, the 27-page report offers informative and insightful details on IT-based technology and higher education. We would like to showcase several important points from the paper as people begin to delve more deeply into Vision 2020.

Sutton appointed Vice Provost

Dean of Z. Smith Reynolds Library Lynn Sutton has been appointed Vice Provost. Effective July 1, Sutton will move into the role currently held by Jennifer Collins, who will become the dean of Southern Methodist University’s law school.

As ZSR dean since 2008, Sutton has been a dynamic leader who helped elevate our library to national prominence, emphasizing close connections with faculty and students.  In 2011, Wake Forest won the national Excellence in Academic Libraries Award from the Association of College and Research Libraries , and remains among the smallest universities ever to receive this prominent award in the university category.  Among her many transformative accomplishments, Sutton has presided over the conversion of ZSR librarians to faculty members; led the adoption of advanced technology that includes our signature ZSRx online courses for specialized audiences such as WFU alumni and parents of current undergraduates; and raised funds to enable the expansion and significant renovation of the library space. Thanks to her leadership, the library is known campus-wide as a hospitable environment for everything from a conversation with colleagues at Starbucks to a quiet nook for research/writing to the perfect place for a Friday-night zombie hunt.

“Lynn’s remarkable creative spirit and her proven ability to work with constituents from every quarter to achieve ambitious goals across academic, student-focused, and research/creative areas made her an obvious choice,” said Provost Rogan Kersh. “She also has developed very strong professional relationships with many key stakeholders across the Wake Forest community, so can swiftly shoulder an immense range of existing activities and programs as well as generating innovative solutions to issues we face—all of which is essential given the kaleidoscope of changes affecting universities nationwide.”

Sutton has held many leadership positions throughout her career and just completed a term as President of the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries.  Her scholarly interests range from intellectual freedom and leadership theory to the future of libraries and library collaboration across university campuses.  She received her AB and AMLS degrees from the University of Michigan and holds a Ph.D. in Education from Wayne State University, where she was later associate dean of their library system.

Sutton will remain in her library dean position during the coming year, with members of her wonderfully capable senior library staff assuming more day-to-day responsibilities for ZSR operations. A search advisory committee will be formed in the fall to choose a successor as dean of ZSR Library.
