Chaplain's Emergency Fund

A message from Wake Forest University Chaplain Tim Auman.

The annual Lovefeast on Dec. 5 is an opportunity to pause and reflect on the gifts we enjoy as a Wake Forest community. But there are many friends and colleagues on our campus who are struggling with financial hardship. The Chaplain’s Emergency Fund (CEF) was created to help faculty, staff and students who are facing a personal financial crisis.

The CEF serves employees on the Reynolda Campus, Wake Downtown and Graylyn as well as contractual workers with employers outside of Wake Forest. Giving is a simple joy of the season, and a gift to the CEF will provide immediate financial relief to members of our community.

Lovefeast celebration 2021

A message from Tim Auman, University Chaplain

Dear Wake Forest faculty, staff, students and retired faculty and staff,

Please join the Wake Forest campus community as we celebrate Lovefeast on Sunday, December 5. This year, our annual holiday tradition is as follows:

  • 6 p.m. an outdoor gathering on Hearn Plaza to light the luminaries and enjoy Moravian cookies and cider
  • 6:30 p.m. the doors to Wait Chapel will open followed by the prelude at 7:10 p.m.
  • 7:30 p.m. the Lovefeast service will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Please note: In an effort to prioritize the health of our campus community, the service is open to only students, faculty, staff, local trustees and invited guests, including the Winston-Salem State University Choir and their families.

This event is first-come, first seated. When Wait Chapel reaches capacity, simulcast viewing will be available in Brendle Recital Hall in Scales Fine Arts Center.

In compliance with campus policy, masks must be worn indoors at all times, including when the congregation is singing.

This year, one highlight of the service will be a dual performance by the Winston-Salem State Singing Rams and the Wake Forest University Gospel Choir. The program will also feature handbell music, instrumental pieces and favorite choral selections from the Wake Forest Choirs.

Since it was first celebrated by students in 1965, the annual Wake Forest Lovefeast has become a cherished campus tradition. Each year, we gather for music, fellowship and inspirational readings from campus leaders. At the conclusion of the service, after candlelight has spread from person to person like the warmth of the holiday season, guests leave the Chapel with their hearts filled. It’s a magical evening you won’t want to miss.

To maintain the health of students, faculty and staff, Wake Forest is inviting the Winston-Salem community and alumni near and far to join the prelude and service via livestream at lovefeast.wfu.edu. The University is providing several opportunities for local residents to pick up Moravian beeswax candles to light at home as they celebrate Lovefeast remotely.

Lovefeast to be held Dec. 2 in Wait Chapel; two services planned

LovefeastWake Forest will hold the annual Lovefeast services in Wait Chapel on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. The Wake Forest Lovefeast celebrates the unique traditions of the Moravian community in Winston Salem.

The earlier service will be abbreviated and last about one hour. Rather than a sermon, the Christmas story will be told. The traditional evening service will last about 90 minutes.

The services are free and open to the public. The seating is first-come, first-serve.

A lovefeast is a service dedicated to Christian love and seeks to remove social barriers, encourage reverence and respect for the legitimate rights of all people. Luminaries will line Hearn Plaza and Christmas decorations will adorn the chapel.

Both services will be streamed live here: https://lovefeast.wfu.edu/video/

Moravian student Jane Sherrill Stroupe (‘67) organized the first Wake Forest Lovefeast in December 1965. Two hundred students gathered to celebrate the traditional meal of a sweetened bun and creamed coffee.

Since then, the Wake Forest Lovefeast has grown to be one of the biggest Moravian-style lovefeasts in North America and one of Wake Forest’s most cherished traditions for more than 50 years.
