Wake Forest News site gets a dynamic makeover
This week, Wake Forest introduced a new and improved online newsroom (news.wfu.edu) to deliver newsworthy content in a visually-compelling, mobile-responsive and easy-to-navigate design.
“The primary goal of redesigning our online newsroom has been to help journalists covering Wake Forest to do their jobs quicker, easier and better,” said Katie Neal, executive director, news and communications. “Now news.wfu.edu is the digital extension of our team’s guiding philosophy: make telling Wake Forest stories a positive experience for news media by providing them as much content, access and support as possible.”
The online newsroom is the first phase of a multi-year effort by the Office of Communications and External Relations to focus on content marketing and responsive design in order to enhance the University’s storytelling efforts across all platforms. While journalists are the primary audience for the online newsroom, many of the stories told at news.wfu.edu will be of interest to a wide range of audiences interested in Wake Forest and may provide informative content for prospective students, parents, colleagues, alumni and donors visiting departmental or administrative websites.

Staff Advisory Council elects members
Wake Forest’s Staff Advisory Council (SAC) elected 10 new members and re-elected three members in April.
Newly-elected members from the University’s staff include: Steve Allen, Marc Jones, Denise Kelly, Sheila Lockhart, Wendy Logan, Barbara Meredith, Jennifer Rogers, Sarah Smith, Cynthia Tucker and Valerie Waddell..
Re-elected staff members include: Mark Cook, Kevin Cox and Susan Edwards.
Members completing their SAC service include: Shannon Badgett, Matt Clifford, Karen Frekko, Kim Hampton, Jennifer Killingsworth and Teresa Watson.
Established with the support of the President’s Office, the SAC has a number of key responsibilities, including serving as a forum of exchange about policies and issues affecting Wake Forest employees; listening to, examining and responding to ideas, concerns and suggestions of the staff; and conveying those ideas, concerns and suggestions to the University administration.
Its meetings, held monthly during the academic year, are open to staff. More information about the SAC is available here.

Staff Advisory Council announces 2015 election results
The Staff Advisory Council (SAC) is pleased to announce the results of the 2015 spring election. Thirteen new SAC representatives from across the University staff have been elected. New council members are: Landon Burrow (FACS: Maintenance Team 4), James Coffey (FACS: Custodial Services), Lou Gusbar (School of Business- Student Academic Services), Lauren Largen (Graylyn: Ads & Promotions), Sherry Long (Athletics: Student Athletes Services), Ellie Shannon (Athletics: Administration), Shelley Sizemore (Campus Life), Darlene Starnes (Multicultural Affairs), Barbara Stephens-Macri (Human Resources), Amanda Tingle (Dean of Wake Forest College), Amalia Wagner (Office of the Provost), Sandra Whicker (Admissions: Undergraduate), and Sarah Wojcik-Gross (Information Systems).
In addition to newly elected representatives, Artanzia Yates (Information Systems) and Scott Spernoga (Athletics: Sports Medicine) have been re-elected to serve an additional term. Each SAC representative will serve a term of three years and may be re-elected to serve one additional term.

Cox and Lanier named employees of the year
Kevin Cox (MA ’81), director of crisis communications and community relations in University Advancement, and Patty Lanier, administrative coordinator for the Department of Communication, were named Employees of the Year at the Staff Rewards & Recognition Luncheon on Nov. 4.
Cox, who has held a number of leadership roles in the Office of Communications and External Relations, joined Wake Forest as a staff member in 1990. He was recognized for his calm and careful communication style, particularly in difficult situations; his ability to build strong and trusting relationships; his dedication to mentoring staff of all experience levels; and his commitment to preserving and improving the Wake Forest community. Cox currently represents Wake Forest and University Advancement on many committees and councils, including the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce Tech Council, Staff Advisory Council and University Area Neighborhood Association.
Lanier has been at Wake Forest since 1998 and was called the “heartbeat” of her department. She was recognized for taking a proactive, solutions-oriented approach to helping students, faculty and staff in the department; exercising consistently good judgment in routine activities and challenging circumstances; anticipating and planning for upcoming needs; and maintaining a smile and sense of tranquility, while keeping others on deadline.

Faculty, staff hit the bricks

Faculty and staff helped the Wake Forest community “Hit the Bricks” hard this year, joining with students to run nearly 23,000 laps around Hearn Plaza and to raise close to $30,000 for cancer research and the Brian Piccolo Cancer Fund.

“Hit the Bricks” is part of a series of student-run events and activities to honor the former Chicago Bears running back, Brian Piccolo, who attended Wake Forest in the 1960s. The 1971 film, “Brian’s Song,” was based on the real-life relationship between teammates Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers and the bond established when Piccolo discovers he is dying of cancer at the age of 26.
