Construction work to begin near Bostwick and Johnson residence halls

Utility work will begin this week between Bostwick and Johnson Residence Halls, weather permitting. Construction fencing will be installed that will partially block pedestrian traffic on the sidewalk between Bostwick and Johnson heading from the Gulley Dr./Manchester Plaza area toward Collins Residence Hall. Pedestrians will have access to the sidewalks going directly to each building as well as the set of steps leading to Collins on the Johnson side of the courtyard.

The utility work is expected to continue through December. This project is the first step leading into the full renovation of Bostwick and Johnson Halls, which is scheduled to begin in January 2022. The current residents of Bostwick and Johnson will be relocated to the newly renovated Luter Hall prior to the start of renovations on Bostwick and Johnson.

Landscaping plan

The exterior improvements to Bostwick and Johnson necessitate the removal of some aging trees, but the new landscaping plans include the replanting of the trees in a near 2:1 ratio.

Three capital projects begin soon to address significant issues

While new capital projects, largely, have been suspended on the Reynolda Campus, three projects will proceed this summer.  All three are considered necessary to address critical infrastructure and other issues.

They include:

  • Bostwick and Johnson residence halls, neighboring buildings on Gulley Drive that were among the first original buildings to open on the Reynolda Campus. They are closed, at present. Each will receive new heating and cooling equipment that will improve indoor air quality and increase control of indoor environments. Work begins the week of May 4 and will continue through the summer.
  • Greene Hall, Manchester Plaza. The project will focus on some failing structural conditions and water infiltration issues. Some of the project will include replacing certain windows and water proofing, in addition to exterior wall panel work.  Two sides of the building will be worked on—east (facing athletics facilities) and west (facing Manchester Plaza). Access to the building will remain available. The project begins May 11 and will continue through the summer.
  • An extension will be made to the chilled water line that runs underground along Carroll Weathers Drive past Worrell Professional Center. It will be extended underground from the Wake Forest Road/Carroll Weathers Drive intersection to Wellman Way. Temporary road closures are likely, at times, during the project. Work will begin in May (exact date undetermined) and continue through the summer.

Indoor emergency alarm tests planned March 10-12

Wake Forest University will soon test an upgraded fire alarm system that will bring seven new voice messages to emergency speakers in halls and lobbies in many of its academic, administrative and residential buildings.

Anyone in those buildings March 10-12 (during Spring Break) likely will hear test messages announcing an active shooter, an armed intruder, a tornado or other threatening weather. Testing will also include shelter in place, building evacuation and all clear messages.

Wake Forest is bringing the new voice messages to 28 buildings, with long-term plans to bring them to additional facilities. Already, the University has fire alarm systems campus-wide; some feature a voice message announcing a fire emergency.

The additional messages are made possible by upgrades to existing fire alarm systems.
