Habitat build set for Oct. 14 on Davis Field

This a guest post from the campus sponsors of the upcoming Habitat for Humanity build:

In the spirit of the Wake Forest motto, Pro Humanitate, students, faculty, and staff are invited to join the campus community in a special Habitat for Humanity build on Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Davis Field. (Originally, Manchester Plaza was announced as the location, but the site has been moved.) Volunteers will help assemble walls that will be used in the construction of a local Habitat house. Habitat for Humanity seeks to end poverty housing by helping thousands of low-income families secure affordable housing. Since 2005, Habitat has grown from serving 25,000 families each year to serving over 300,000 families annually in the U.S. and more than 70 countries.

Habitat ImageRegister to participate by signing up for a 20 minute slot. 25 volunteers can participate per volunteer shift. The only requirement is a signed waiver and closed-toed shoes. There may be minor disruption due to noise from the build; although, it is our understanding that the potential noise caused should not rise to the level of cancelling class or meetings.

Find out more details and register here.

The On-Campus Build is a special event in preparation for the next Leadership Project featuring Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity. The Leadership Project is designed to celebrate the many ways leadership development is taught and inspired at Wake Forest and to engage members of our community with compelling personal leadership stories from a wide range of experiences and perspectives. Save the date and plan to attend the keynote address on Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. in Brendle Recital Hall.

WFU Habitat for Humanity House Built

habitat.300x175Wake Forest volunteers from the Reynolda Campus and the medical center worked together to build a Habitat for Humanity house in Winston-Salem.

The house was dedicated Jan. 28.

Construction on the house began Aug. 28 with several hundred members of the Wake Forest community — including faculty, staff and students — contributing their time and skills to the project.

The heated, 1,450-square foot house features four bedrooms, a porch and a partial basement.

Wake Forest and Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center are once again cosponsoring a Habitat for Humanity house, and volunteers are needed to help build it. No experience is necessary!

There are two main options for volunteering:

  1. The Labor of Love Building “Blitz” (Wed., Aug. 28, through Sat., Aug. 31, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.): During the four-day blitz building event, the WFU/WFBMC house will be started  along with two other houses. The walls of all three houses will be raised concurrently at each location. Then, teams of volunteers will work on those houses during the event. Lunch is provided each day.
  2. Regular building schedule (Tues./Wed./Thur. and Sat., 8 a.m.-3 p.m.): This will start on Wednesday, Sept. 3 and continue until the house is finished.

Habitat can reserve dates for groups beginning with the Labor of Love event. Wake Forest hopes to have 20 volunteers each of the first four days. Working on a Habitat house together is a great bonding experience for your department or office, and you’ll be helping to make a dream come true for one of Habitat’s hard-working partner families.

We hope you’ll consider reserving a build date! Please let Debbie Cesta (Debbie.Cesta@habitatforsyth.org) from Habitat for Humanity know if you have any questions and if there’s a date that you would like to reserve.
