Wake Forest awarded ‘Seal of Excellence’ for meeting study abroad goals

Wake Forest has earned the Institute of International Education (IIE) Seal of Excellence for achieving its goal to increase the number of U.S. students studying abroad. With a study abroad participation rate of 81% by 2020, the University exceeded its initial goal of 75%.

“The IIE Seal of Excellence is about more than just meeting our target percentage of the number of students studying abroad. Fundamentally, it reflects years of collective effort to make study abroad more accessible to all of our students. In this way, the recognition is a tribute to all the Wake Forest students, faculty, and staff who have made it possible to meet our goal,” said David Taylor, assistant dean of Global Study Away Programs.

Wake Forest is one of only 19 colleges and universities in the U.S. to be recognized by IIE for meeting their Generation Study Abroad commitments in 2020.

Wake Forest represented at inaugural Global Senior Leadership Symposium

Wake Forest University Associate Provost for Global Affairs Kline Harrison, Director of Global Abroad Programs Jessica Francis and Assistant Dean of Global Study Away David Taylor were recently selected from a competitive applicant pool to participate in the inaugural Global Senior Leadership Symposium on Dec. 15 and 16. The forum is hosted by EF Education First, the Forum on Education Abroad and the Association of International Education Administrators, in partnership with EF’s educational partner, the Nobel Prize Museum.

The Global Senior Leadership Symposium is a unique opportunity for higher education leaders to collaborate with a global network of peers, explore international strategies from various cultural perspectives and discuss the role of education abroad and global mobility within higher education. Participants will engage in peer learning circles to discuss the future of internationalization and global learning, and they hear from eight Nobel Laureates and other thought leaders throughout the symposium.

“In this moment of unprecedented challenges that face our nation and our world, we at Wake Forest are actively reaffirming our longstanding commitment to international education and the essential role that global understanding—in all of its forms—occupies within our institution,” said Harrison, Francis and Taylor.

AC awards Mary and David Taylor

David Taylor, Director of Global Abroad Programs and Mary Dwyer, President & CEO of IES Abroad

The Institute for the International Education of Students presented the IES Abroad Professional Development Award, recently, to David Taylor, director of global abroad programs at Wake Forest.  He is a staff member in the Center for Global Programs and Studies.

Every year, IES Abroad presents three prestigious leadership awards at their annual conference to recognize study abroad professionals’ substantial contributions and achievements to the field. IES Abroad is a non-profit study abroad organization that administers study abroad programs for U.S. college-aged students.

Taylor implemented a study abroad outreach plan for underrepresented populations that resulted in a 25 percent increase in first-generation and minority Wake Forest students studying abroad. This initiative helped the University receive the 2013 Institute of International Education (IIE) Andrew Heiskell Award for Innovation in Study Abroad. Taylor has served on IES Abroad’s Annual Conference Planning Committee and is an active member of NAFSA: Association of International Educators and the North Carolina Association of International Educators (NCAIE).

He has also presented at the WISE Conference, IES Abroad Annual Conference, and the Forum on Education Abroad Conference.
