Womack named 2015 MLK ‘Building the Dream’ award winner

womack.300x175Associate librarian Hu Womack  has been named a Wake Forest University 2015 Martin Luther King Jr. “Building the Dream” award winner.

The award is traditionally presented to a student and a professor or administrator from both Wake Forest and Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) who exemplify King’s qualities and promote diversity within the community. This year, one campus leader and two students were recognized at Wake Forest.

In addition to his work as an instructional librarian, Hu Womack is a faculty fellow for South Hall and an academic adviser. He hosts a Thanksgiving lunch for students unable to travel home for the holiday season, works to create programs that are helpful and engaging to first year students and shares his time and energy supporting and mentoring members of Wake Forest’s LGBTQ community. He is beloved by students, faculty and staff alike for his helpfulness and cheerfulness and his commitment to building a community that values everyone. Womack, who earned his undergraduate degree from Wake Forest in 1990 and his MBA in 2000, has been a full-time employee in the Z. Smith Reynolds library for more than 20 years.

Call for 2015 'Building the Dream' nominations

MLK.300x175On Jan. 19, the nation will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Each year, representatives from Wake Forest and Winston-Salem State Universities form a joint Martin Luther King Jr. programming committee and present the “Building the Dream” award.

The award is traditionally presented to a student and a professor or administrator from both Wake Forest and Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) who exemplify King’s qualities and promote diversity within the community.

Last year, one student and three campus leaders were recognized at Wake Forest. Read “Voices for Justice” to learn about the 2014 “Building the Dream” award-winners.

If you would like to nominate a student or faculty/staff member for the “Building the Dream” award, complete and submit the brief nomination form. Nominations must be received by Tuesday, Nov. 18.

Award-winners will be announced at the ceremonial banquet in January at Wake Forest University.

Nominations due for the Building the Dream award

Each year, representatives from Wake Forest and Winston-Salem State universities form a joint Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. programming committee. Annually, the “Building the Dream” award to one professor or administrator and one student from each university.

This award will be given to a person who embodies the qualities King epitomized and actively exercises these qualities in his or her community (on and off campus). The award will be announced at the ceremonial banquet on Jan. 20, 2014, at Winston-Salem State.

Each year brings the opportunity to celebrate the life and legacy of one of America’s most inspirational individuals, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unfortunately, some Americans only reflect on Dr. King’s accomplishments one day per year. We are honored to acknowledge those whose life builds upon his dream.
