Application period open for Move More program

Move more Move OftenSpring semester applications are being accepted through Feb. 12 for the wellbeing project called Move More. Move Often.

The project, which is a research program (IRB# IRB00022164), is open to students, faculty and staff.

It is designed as an eight-week step challenge to encourage individuals to increase their daily physical activity. Using Fitbit activity trackers, participants can monitor their daily steps and activity. Throughout the eight-week challenge, participants can access performance incentives, receive supplemental resources and materials, as well as discounts.

Participants will be required to attend a one-hour orientation session. A Fitbit will be provided to participants. Participants may also use their own Fitbit, instead.

At the conclusion of the challenge, prizes will be awarded on an individual basis for significant improvement in the number of average daily steps. Following each challenge, participants will have the opportunity to re-enroll for additional challenges to keep improving their daily physical activity and potentially win more prizes.

This project is co-sponsored by Office of Wellbeing, Campus Life, Health and Exercise Science, Environmental Health and Safety, Hospitality & Auxiliary Services, Residence Life and Housing, Information Technology, PDC Run, Forest, Run (Walk Forest), Therapeutic Lifestyle Change, Aramark, Campus Recreation.

News team presents about 'Commencement Speaker Drama'

prsa.300x175On April 16, Katie Neal (’03) and Cheryl Walker (’88) presented at the national Public Relations Society of America’s (PRSA) Counselors to Higher Education Senior Summit in Washington, D.C.

Their presentation, “Commencement Speaker Drama? Getting It Right in the National Spotlight,” shared best practices from the media frenzy that descended upon Wake Forest’s 2014 commencement ceremony when speaker Jill Abramson was abruptly fired as Executive Editor of the New York Times.

As they reflected upon the five-day span between her firing and her commencement speech, Neal and Walker credited offices and partners across campus – including University Events, Parking and Transportation, Facilities and Campus Services, Information Systems, Aramark and University Police – with their team’s ability to accommodate a ten-fold increase in media attendance and capitalize on the national spotlight shining upon Wake Forest.

Faculty & staff discount at Shorty's and Bistro '34 in November

November is Faculty/Staff Appreciation Month at Aramark, which means a 10 percent discount a Shorty’s and Bistro ’34. A Wake Forest University ID is required to take advantage of deal.

As a reminder, faculty and staff­ can add a meal plan to their Deacon One Card for use at a variety of campus dining locations. Visit the dining office at Reynolda Hall, Room 12 or www.wakeforest.campusdish.com for more information.

TechXploration is today

TechXploration will be Thursday, April 4, from noon to 3 p.m. in room 401 of the Benson University Center. Beverages and snacks will be catered by Aramark, and you can register to win a donated Lenovo Android Tablet.

TechXploration is designed to showcase faculty use of technology and bring together faculty and staff who want to share their experiences with current technology efforts. Faculty, staff and students will be able to see how technologies are being leveraged in teaching, learning, research, engagement, and creative endeavors at Wake Forest.

Presentations will be in poster session format, so join us for any portion of the event. Presentations will include:

  • using multimedia tools for language instruction
  • using TelePresence, WebEx, and social tools with law students
  • the abilities of Qualtrics – a university survey tool
  • new versions of WIN and Mobile WIN
  • publishing your own e-books
  • online assessments in the OPCD for use in advising students
