Need to know more about registering your vehicle for on-campus parking, or want to send us feedback? Click here »

“We’ve had more than 300 students, faculty and staff agree to short-term solutions to alleviate parking problems in the spring semester created by the construction of two new residence halls and a dining center,” said Alex Crist, director of parking and transportation. “Now we have created a long-term plan that will start with students re-registering their cars this summer for the fall semester.”

Crist outlined this plan at a Campus Connections meeting that drew about 250 people to Benson Center on May 3. It’s a plan that he has been developing with Jim Alty, the associate vice president of Facilities and Campus Services, through meetings with Student Government, Faculty Senate and the Staff Advisory Council in the last few weeks.

Here’s what to expect this fall:

First year students

Park in the University Corporate Center (UCC) lot with purchase of a $300 parking permit for the year.

Shuttle service will operate as follows:

From 7:30 a.m. until midnight Monday – Thursday

Friday 7:30 a.m. – 10 p.m.

Sunday 5 p.m. – midnight

Students can bring their vehicles on-campus after 5 p.m. Friday – Monday at 7:30 a.m.

Sophomores

Park in Lot Z2, just across Polo Road with purchase of a $300 parking permit for the year.

The Gray Line shuttle serves this lot. View the schedule.

Residential Juniors and Seniors

Park on campus with purchase of a $500 parking permit for the year.

Park off campus at the First Assembly lot for with a permit for $300 a year.

Commuter students

Will be able to purchase an on-campus parking permit. They are sold first-come, first-served with a cap of 900 permits. Once those permits are gone, no more will be sold.

Graduate students and seniors will have the first opportunity for on-campus commuter permits, which will be available on-line at http://wfuparking.t2hosted.com. These permits will be available for purchase on Monday, June 4, at 9 a.m. through Sunday, June 10, at 11 p.m.

Juniors will have the second opportunity to purchase an on-campus permit beginning Monday, June 11, at 9 a.m. through Sunday, June 17, at 11 p.m., if permits are still available.

Off-campus parking is available in First Assembly lot for $300.

Off-campus parking is available in the UCC lot for free.

Faculty/Staff

Current permits are good until June 30, 2013.

Vehicle re-registration starts June 1, 2013.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to consider joining Wake Forest’s carpool program.

Interested in North Campus construction?

Residence Halls

Farrell Hall

This parking plan will alleviate the 11 percent reduction in parking spaces the University has experienced since construction began to expand the North Campus area with Farrell Hall, the two residence halls and the dining center.

“We know that parking on campus can be tight during times of high occupancy, but we think this plan will enable us to have more flexibility and adapt to changes that have occurred on campus,” Crist said.

The event was organized by the Gay-Straight Student Alliance.

“I am heartened by the love, support, and activism I have seen across our campus, our community, and our state these past few months,” said Angela Mazaris, the director of Wake Forest’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning Center. “I am inspired by the hours that members of the campus community spent writing letters, making phone calls, fasting, protesting, working the polls, and having meaningful conversations with people in your dorms, your families, and your organizations.”

Mazaris emphasized that support is available across campus.

“You are loved and supported by people all across the Wake Forest community. Drop by the LGBTQ Center to see the messages of love that people have left on the door.”

In addition, Chief Human Resources Officer Carmen Canales announced that Wake Forest’s continued commitment to a welcoming and diverse campus community remains intact.

“The University has shown this support by extending health and welfare benefits to same sex domestic partners and their children for more than twelve years,” she said. “This policy remains unchanged and we continue to explore benefit options that support our entire campus community.”

“I don’t think this merger would have been possible without the help and support that Meri gave over the past year,” said Dave Pitts, the director of Mail Services for the Medical Center and for Wake Forest in nominating Silveri. “Meri’s constant inspiration and motivation that has kept staff together and focused on the bigger picture.”

Local residents have the chance to win a new iPad2 just by visiting local attractions, including Wake Forest’s Museum of Anthropology, and snapping a few photos between now and May 13.

Visitors who post their photos to the attractions’ Facebook pages will be entered to win prize packs to be given away by each participating attraction and the grand prize of an iPad2 tablet computer.

“There are a lot of great places right here within a short drive of everyone in our area. These are family places where you can learn, play, and just get out and enjoy what Forsyth County has to offer,” says Sara Cromwell, president of the Association of Visitor Attractions of Forsyth County, the sponsor of the event.

Cromwell also is the Public Relations, Marketing & Membership Coordinator at the Museum of Anthropology.

Participating attractions include Downtown Arts District Association (DADA), Historic Bethabara Park, Historic Bethania, Körners Folly, Museum of Anthropology, Old Salem Museums and Gardens, Piedmont Craftsmen, Reynolda House Museum of American Art, Sciworks, Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA), Tanglewood Park, Visit Winston-Salem Visitors Center, and West End Historic District. For more information on the event and the complete contest rules, visit www.forsythphotoadventure.com.

At the contest’s conclusion each of the participating attractions will pick a winner from among photos posted at their Facebook pages. The photo that is judged to best show “fun” at each attraction will win a prize from the location. The Forsyth Photo Adventure’s iPad winner will be randomly selected from the names of all official entrants posting at any of the attractions. “The more sites at which you post, the better your chances of winning the iPad,” Cromwell says.

The contest coincides with National Tourism Week, May 5-13, an initiative of the U.S. Travel Association. Travel and tourism in North Carolina generates approximately $22 billion in total economic demand and employs more than 350,000 people. Cromwell said, “We believe that this contest is a good way to encourage people to become more familiar with their local area, but also to demonstrate the value of the tourism industry.”

Mary Gerardy, the associate vice president and dean of Campus Life, talked to an audience of about 250 at Campus Connections last week about the vibrant campus efforts that started about 10 years ago, led by students who wanted more activities, traditions and hangouts.

Gerardy said that Campus Life has tripled the number of non-Greek activities on campus since the 2009-10 academic year. The addition of The Barn to campus has been part of the success story, with 53 percent of the students’ events there being non-Greek and 49 percent of the events held there not involving alcohol.

The new programs have also encouraged more Greek organizations to hold their events on campus, greatly increasing the number held now compared to the 2009-10 academic year.

Gerardy also walked the audience through a student development program called My Journey. The program targets students by class, with activities, challenges and communications specifically aimed at their growth, development and class identity.

The first-year students have a program called Awakenings that helps them transition to campus, find friends, deal with exams and test anxiety, as well as promote bonding among students on each floor of the residence halls.

Sophomore INventure provides messages around key themes such as academic success, cultural competency and service, gratitude, healthy relationships and more.

Next year, the junior class will be involved in a program called Connections. Junior year is a time when students look outward and learn more about themselves and their place in the world.

Senior Celebrations helps prepare students for a transition that can be more difficult than trading high school for college. The Campus Life teams will prepare and equip students with real life skills and information, while celebrating their accomplishments before the commencement ceremony.
